The AI workforce reality
The Bank of England / FCA AI in UK Financial Services Survey 2024 found 75% of surveyed firms already using AI, 17% using foundation models, 33% relying on third-party systems, and 55% operating with partial autonomy. Adoption in financial services is no longer a planning question; it is an operational reality.
In front-office advisory, relationship management and markets functions, generative AI is predominantly augmentation: it compresses research, drafting and client-preparation time rather than removing the regulated individual. The exposed surface is the analyst and servicing layer that supports them — and the Treasury Select Committee’s AI in Financial Services inquiry (January 2026) signals sustained parliamentary attention on how the sector manages that transition.
Because certified and approved individuals sit under the FCA Senior Managers and Certification Regime, transition here is not only an exposure question but a fit-and-proper continuity question: certifications must be carried through retraining and redeployment deliberately, not allowed to lapse by accident.
Where the exposure sits
| Role family | Type | Horizon | Exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Analysts (Generalist) | augmentation | 2-5 years | 64 |
| Customer Operations | high substitution | 1-3 years | 78 |
| Inside Sales & Telemarketing | medium substitution | 2-4 years | 68 |
| Senior Professional / Knowledge Worker | augmentation | 3-7 years | 38 |
Where the workforce can go
The duties that bear on this sector
FCA Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SMCR)
Financial services clients with certified or approved individuals.
EU AI Act — Article 26 deployer obligations (Reg. EU 2024/1689)
Any UK firm using third-party or in-house workforce AI (recruitment, performance management, task allocation, contract decisions) where the system falls under Annex III Point 4. High-risk obligations originally set for 2 August 2026 are being deferred to 2 December 2027 under the EU Digital Omnibus (agreement May 2026); the original date remains technically operative until adoption is finalised.
ICO Guidance on Automated Decision-Making and Profiling
Any AI-assisted scoring or recommendation in workforce decisions with significant effect on individuals.
UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 (as updated by DUAA 2025)
All workforce data processing — universal. Data Use and Access Act 2025 phased in during 2026.
Equality Act 2010
All redeployment, restructuring, and selection decisions — universal.
Full requirements for each duty are set out on the regulatory landscape map. Forta scores roles, not individuals — the audit itself does not trigger automated-decision provisions.
